The announcement that the Chandrayaan-1 will be launched on October 22, is a major turning point in the History of Indian Space science. It shows the will and character of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) who have developed this project without having a sufficiently large (in comparisons with other space capable countries) budget, and not even a umbrella space mission.
The ISRO has been a legitimate structure for the development of India. The launch of the INSAT and the IRS has been critical to India's success in the adjoined fields. In fact the BPO business that is sprouting up in India so fast is a direct consequence of its growing power in telecommunications.
This and more is attributed to ISRO, but, as a paradox, they get only less than 1% share of the total Budget in India and depend mostly on grant laet issued to coninue up it's projects.
Because of the grants etc. being only issued with the interest of the nation, ISRO coninuously works fo the benifit of the people of India. In fact, I had read an aritcle in the Panorama, which is a yearly magazine, that Chandrayaan was a motive for the people to "map and use the resources on the moon for the future citizens of India".
It is very nice to hear that. The scientist out there tirelessly work for the betterment of the people, yet are restricted for their open exploration of the Universe.
Anyway, this will be change from their routine of launching sattelites for telecommunications. Now, they will be researching the surface of the moon. It will be of a large interest to many other Space research organizations (ESA, NASA) because the mapping done will be used in future projects, such as the moonbase currently being planned by NASA.
This way, the Chandrayaan mission is indeed one of the most important moon missions in recent history.
Not to mention, it also encloses a billion expectations and a countrie's pride.
Let us hope for the best
